Courses and Flexible Studying

Adult learners can apply and take part in most college and university courses and in some cases you will be surprised at how many mature learners are studying at an institution. For example 41% of students at Bishop Grosseteste University College in Lincoln are classed as mature students and 26% of students at De Montfort University in Leicester are mature students.

In addition to the full time courses that are available in the East Midlands there are also other ways of learning which are more flexible and allow your training to fit in around your home and work life. There are also courses that have been specifically designed for adult learners.

Access Courses
Many colleges and universities have access courses. These are courses that are specially designed for adult learners; they are validated by the Open College Network.
Access to FE courses are an alternative to taking GCSE’s. Access to HE courses lead to a level 3 qualification which is equivalent to A levels. On completion of an Access to HE course a learner will be able to apply to a university.
The below Open College Network document is a directory of the Access courses available in the East Midlands. It also gives a detailed explanation of what Access Courses are and lists where to go for further information.

Community Learning
Some colleges and training providers offer courses in the community, for example at schools or libraries. These are often short, or introductory courses aimed at giving encouragement and support for adults who want to get back into learning.

Part time courses
Many courses will be offered to be studied on a part time basis. This may be more suitable for you as an adult learner, as you would be able to fit your learning in around other commitments such as work or family life.

Distance learning
Some colleges and universities have distance learning courses. This involves studying on-line, so you can study wherever there is a computer. You can therefore study when you want, fitting it in around your work or family life. There is normally a support team you can call if you require any help. Derby University have a good description of distance learning on their website. http://www.derby.ac.uk/online
The Open University offers many distance learning courses.

Flexible Learning
Some colleges and universities offer flexible learning. Course attendance is not limited to a particular day and learners can progress at a time and place that suits them. This often includes evenings and weekends. West Nottinghamshire College offers flexible learning and the website gives a brief description of what this might involve: http://www.westnotts.ac.uk/Adult/Flexible%20Learning%20Centres.asp
